Soldier Visits Essex to Express Thanks

Over the last 2 years, Essex Aerospace & Defense sent care packages to six different men and women of the armed forces serving in Iraq. Essex Corporate and PB&R also sent care packages. Many of us received thank you notes from these soldiers and their troops.

One of the soldiers, Jennifer Maurer, was adopted through WIL radio station’s Adopt a Soldier program. On April 8, 2005, Jennifer visited Essex Industries to thank everyone in person for their support. Jennifer arrived at Essex dressed in her fatigues and accompanied by her aunt, Shari, who had posted Jennifer on the WIL 92.3 Adopt a Soldier website. Jennifer and Shari were given a tour of the facility. Jennifer was happy for the chance to meet everyone and repeatedly expressed her gratitude for the support that Essex has shown her. At the end of the tour, Jennifer was given a gift from the company store, a gift card to Target and a thank you card. She was very moved by the reception she received from Essex and its people.

Jennifer said that packages, and even more so letters really helped the troops to feel good about what they were doing over there. All of the cards and pictures she and her roommates received from children were hung on the walls and all letters were posted in the hallways so that everyone could read them. Items that people didn’t need or couldn’t use were also placed in the hall for others to enjoy. Jennifer and her roommates took pleasure in anything that smelled nice and helped them to feel more feminine.

Jennifer, aged 24, has been in the Army for five years. Her rank is E4 Specialist SPC, First Cavalry Division 215th FSV. In 2001-2002, she served a tour of duty in Korea and she was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky when the events of 9/11 occurred. Maurer was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas when her unit was enlisted to go to Baghdad, but Jennifer was pregnant at the time and unable to deploy with her unit. She gave birth to her son, Anthony, and was with him for only a short time before she had to leave to join her unit in Iraq. Jennifer left her son in Oregon in the care of her parents during her deployment. She served six months in Iraq.

Maurer returned to the United States last summer. She stopped in St. Louis to visit her aunt and thank all of those who sent her packages and letters. After leaving St. Louis, she traveled on to Oregon to visit her family and see her young son for the first time in six months. She is currently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and plans to re-enlist for another three years. Our thanks and our support goes out to Jennifer and all of the soldiers who fight for our freedom.
